چکیده

The adult pattern of the azygos vein system of various mammals has received the attention of many early investigators (Eustachius, 1561 ; Bardeleben, 1848 ; Marshall, 1850; and Morrison, 1879). Since there has not almways been agreement among these workers in the patterns described, attempts were made by some of them to try to correlate the patterns on a developmental basis (Barcleleben, 1848 ; Marshall, 1850; and Parker and Tozier, 1897). Tihey ( 'B), Kampmeier ( ' la), Sabin ( '14, '15), and Reagan ('19) each described the development of the azygos system of a different mammal. Although there was partial agreement on certain aspects of the embryology, it was not until recently that there has been general accord. Since one of the more significant contributions to the development of the azygos system in the rat (Strong, '36) has never appeared as a journal article and is procurable only as a thesis from the Indiana University Library, it will be included and related to the present description of the adult pattern.

Prenatal diagnosis of a variant of the azygos venous system

BACKGROUND The azygos venous system consists of the azygos vein on the right side and the hemiazygos and accessory hemiazygos on the left side. The azygos vein runs through the abdominal cavity along the right side of the vertebral bodies, in a cranial direction, passes through the diaphragm and reaches the mediastinum, where it forms the arch of the azygos which flows into the superior vena ca...

Azygos Vein Aneurysm as a Posterior Mediastinal Mass Discovered After Minor Chest Trauma

Azygos vein aneurysm is a rare cause of a posterior or paratracheal mediastinal mass. Trauma or conditions causing elevated flow or pressure in the azygos system, such as cardiac failure or cirrhosis of the liver are secondary causes of aneurysm of the azygos vein. We report a case of asymptomatic saccular aneurysm of the azygos vein in a 45-year-old man with blunt minor chest trauma. The azygos...

Oesophagectomy in a patient with azygos vein continuation of the inferior vena cava: report of a case

The azygos system of veins varies greatly in its mode of origin, but the variation in which the azygos vein is a continuation of the inferior vena cava (IVC) is rare. During an oesophagectomy, the azygos vein typically is transected as a requirement of the surgery. In this case, the enlarged azygos and its arch were a continuation of the IVC. During our procedure, we first established a bypass ...

Anatomical variations of the azygos venous system

The azygos vein (gr. azygos – 'unpaired') typically starts from the posterior aspect of the inferior vena cava (IVC), at or below the level of the renal veins. The origin is not constant. If present, the lumbar azygos ascends anterior to the upper lumbar vertebrae. It may pass behind the right crus of the diaphragm or pierce it, or it may traverse the aortic hiatus to the right of the cisterna ...

The azygos vein pathway: an overview from anatomical variations to pathological changes

The azygos venous system represents an accessory venous pathway supplying an important collateral circulation between the superior and inferior vena cava. The aim of this article is to revise the wide spectrum of changes ranging from normal to pathological conditions involving the azygos system. Teaching points • The azygos vein is a collateral venous pathway, becoming a vital shunt if major pa...
